GESU 8TH GRADE AWARDS 2009
All 8th grade Gesu and Gesu PSR athletes are eligible. The awards and the criteria are listed below.
THOMAS KOCH OUTSTANDING ATHLETE AWARD
Thomas Koch was a former Gesu student and athlete. A gifted performer in football, basketball, and baseball, he was self motivated to excellence in the classroom. For his athletic prowess, he was awarded the 1984 Outstanding Athlete Award. While attending St. Ignatius High School, Tom was suddenly challenged with cancer. Tom showed tremendous courage in his illness. He passed away in 1986 leaving a legacy of inner strength and courage. In 1995, the Gesu Booster Club attached his name to the Outstanding Athlete Award.
Nominated by COACHES- Awarded to the 8th Grade Boy and Girl who:
• Excelled in performance on the athletic field.
• Used talent to best of his/her ability.
• Was motivated to excellence in athletic endeavors.
FR. MURPHY SCHOLAR ATHLETE AWARD
Fr. Murphy, SJ. was Associate Pastor at Gesu from 1949-1977. He was a longtime moderator of the Booster Club. The Scholar Athlete Award was named in his honor for the many hours he dedicated to the athletic program at Gesu.
Nominated by TEACHERS and Voted on by Coaches – Awarded to the 8th Grade Boy and girl who:
• Consistently strove for excellence in a classroom and the playing field.
• Accepted responsibilities with a sense of integrity and dignity.
• Kept the quality of his/her school work high while participating in athletics.
FR. BOGGINS SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD
Fr. Boggins, SJ. was named Pastor at Gesu in 1964. A native Clevelander, he was raised in St. Coleman Parish. Before coming to Gesu, he had various assignments including assistant principal at St. Ignatius High School, Army Chaplain, and Pastor of Gesu Parish in Detroit. A soft spoken man, he is remembered as a great story teller. He is the man responsible for starting the Gesu News. He passed away in 1966 after a short tenure as Pastor.

• Consistently gave outstanding effort to gain the most from his/her given talents.
• Participated with enthusiasm in the athletic programs.
• Exhibited unselfishness, dedication, fairness, honor, and self control.
• The athlete was courteous, considerate, and respectful of coaches and teammates.
